The Alcohol Rehab
Center
_____________________________________________________________________
The traditional alcohol rehab programs are
often based on a 12-step approach modeled after the
twelve-step program that originated with Alcoholics
Anonymous.
Other "non-traditional" alcohol rehab
programs, however, frequently take place in an alcohol rehab
center or in a hospital and are seen as providing “alternative”
rehabilitation therapeutic methodologies that are not related
to the 12-step recovery approach.
The Alcohol Rehab
Center: Counseling and Medications
Most of the “alternative” alcohol rehab therapies take place
in a hospital setting or in an alcohol rehab
center that features rehabilitation methods that are
based on the administration of doctor-prescribed medications
along with intensive counseling and therapy.
Moreover, many of these non-traditional
approaches deal with alcohol addiction from both an emotional
and a physiological vantage point.
Additionally, some of the more effective
alcohol rehab programs are more wide-ranging than others
and consequently focus on how the alcohol dependent person
will manage and cope with relationship issues after he or
she completes treatment, attains sobriety, and returns
home.
Furthermore, some of the more successful alcohol rehab
programs operate from a holistic framework that helps
alcoholics identify, address, and work through some of the
primary issues that probably lead to the individual's alcohol
dependency in the first place.
Some of these foundational concerns are the
following: poor anger management capabilities, loss,
grief, poor interpersonal relationship skills, pain, poor
financial management skills, spirituality issues, careen
indecision, poor coping skills, and unemployment.
| Currently, approximately 14
million Americans, 1 in every 13 adults, abuse
alcohol or are alcoholic. |
The Need For Outpatient Follow-Up
Treatment
When a person undergoes alcohol rehab, it is very important
to address what he or she is going to do after he or she has
completed the rehabilitation protocol. In other words,
getting through detox and overcoming one's withdrawal symptoms
is important, but so is the “follow-up” counseling that
effective rehab program frequently start as soon as the
residential part of the rehabilitation process
terminates. Some of the better known and more
successful alcohol rehab centers, for instance, provide
outpatient therapy and counseling and follow-up for one year
after the inpatient part of the protocol is
finished. In a word, the more comprehensive and
quality-oriented alcohol rehab centers focus on treatment
programs that are constructed and implemented for “long-term”
success, rather than on "quick and easy," band aid
approaches.
| During the last stage of
alcoholism, benders are typical. More
specifically, during this stage, the alcoholic
frequently gets helplessly drunk and may remain
in this condition for days at a time. The
unattainable goal for the alcoholic at this
time is to find the feeling of euphoria they
once experienced. |
The Importance of The Rehab
Atmosphere
The “rehab” environment in which an alcohol dependent person
finds himself or herself is an important treatment
issue. Some of the more proficient alcohol rehab
centers, for instance, provide an involving, stimulating,
comfortable, positive, and safe environment that fosters
effective, supportive, and productive long-term rehabilitation
success. While the majority of alcohol rehab programs can
be quite expensive, especially those that include residential,
in-patient treatment options, the more professional and
results-oriented alcohol rehab centers put financial gain on
the back burner and limit the number of alcoholics they accept
for treatment. This is more of a "treatment"
decision and less of a "profit" calculation so that staff can
provide the compassion, time, resources, and the effort that
first-rate, quality alcohol rehab requires.
| Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a
group of symptoms manifested by individuals who
stop drinking alcohol after a pattern of
continuous and excessive consumption.
These symptoms can range from mild to moderate
to severe and include both psychological and
behavioral aspects. |

manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms

- Outpatient programs that are individualized to “fit”
the financial capabilities, the personality, and the needs
of each client
- Hotel or treatment facility suites for out-of town
clients

from alcohol relapse
- Intensive day and night counseling and therapy
programs
- Programs with different time periods and length of
treatment options that are tailored around the needs of

| Alcohol can be dangerous in
smaller amounts if it is used in combination
with the following drugs: certain
anti-seizure medications such as phenobarbital;
sedatives such as barbiturates, tranquilizers,
and cannabis; and narcotic pain medications
such as codine, opium, heroin, darvocet, and
codine derivatives. |
The Alcohol Rehab Center:
Conclusion
Many of the "traditional" alcohol rehab programs are based
on the 12-step recovery methodology initiated by Alcoholics
Anonymous. Other, less traditional alcohol rehab methods,
however, have emerged. These non-traditional programs
typically focus less on factors such as numerous meetings, a
"higher power," and group support and more research-validated,
empirical treatment approaches that focus on the administration
of doctor-prescribed medications combined with intensive
counseling and therapy and a solid, doable follow-up treatment
program.
Some of the more proficient "non-traditional” alcohol rehab
programs take place in a rehab hospital or in an
alcohol rehab center. Such
rehabilitation facilities are usually staffed with
compassionate, supportive, and competent healthcare
professionals who do everything in their power to help their
clients learn more effective coping, relationship,
decision-making, and "life" skills; help them recover from
their dependency; and teach them how to reclaim their lives for
the long-term.
| A dysfunctional family is a
family in which conflict, abuse, or
misbehavior, by individual family members takes
place on a continuing basis, leading other
members of the family to perpetuate, enable,
and reinforce such behaviors. Often,
children grow up in dysfunctional families with
the belief that such behaviors and ways of
relating are "normal." |
